Auction result well in line with expectations
In January 2006 Christies in London held the auction British and Continental Pictures and Watercolours, which included the work H.M.S. Royal Oak (illustrated); H.M.S. Collingwood; H.M.S. Cossack; H.M.S. Revenge; H.M.S. Triumph; H.M.S. Commonwealth; H.M.S. Powerful; H.M.S. Swiftsure; H.M.S. Victorious; H.M.S. Saracen; H.M.S. Pincher; and H.M.S. Challenger by James Scott Maxwell. The price achieved of GBP 336.00 (€ 492.48) was within expectations - the estimate range had previously been set by the auction house as GBP 200.00 – 400.00. Admittedly, works by James Scott Maxwell have also been auctioned for a multiple of this price - according to our records, the highest result so far was achieved by the work Two albums of watercolours of ship portraits including; The American steamships St Paul and Haverford (one illustrated); and The American yacht Erl King in July 2007 with an auction result of GBP 3,120.00 (€ 4,633.92).
