HISHIKAWA MORONOBU (1630/31?-1694), illustrator: Danjo onure emakura (Illustrated pillow [book] of dripping wet couples), an erotic book now separated and remounted as an accordion album, single-page colophon with names of artist and publisher Urokogataya Magobei, single-page preface with book title as above followed by thirty-seven double-page illustrations of the couples referenced in the title in black ink with handcoloring, text in a running band at top, in brocade covers with blank title slip, single pages 10¼ x 7in. (26 x 17.7cm.) approx.--good impressions, color stains, soil, rubbing, later ink inscriptions

This price was achieved in the auction Japanese & Korean Art at Christies in New York and exceeded the previously set upper estimate of USD 4,000.00 many times over. Admittedly, works by Hishikawa Moronobu have also been auctioned for a multiple of this price - according to our records, the highest result so far was achieved by the work Beauty turning her head, c. 1690 in March 2009 with an auction result of USD 74,500.00 (€ 56,179.78).
