A top price for Gilbert Stuart
When the work George Washington (Vaughan type) by Gilbert Stuart was auctioned at Christies in New York in May 2018, the result exceeded expectations many times over. The upper estimate was set at a - in retrospect quite modest - USD 1,200,000.00 but the actual price achieved was more than nine times as high at USD 11,562,500.00 (€ 9,907,883.46). This high result makes George Washington (Vaughan type) the most expensive artwork by Gilbert Stuart that we have observed at auctions so far.
