Artwork auctioned at ten times the upper estimate price
When the work Five views of Bender: A distant view of the city; The entrance to the city; The city walls; The city seen from a pontoon by the Dniestr; and The city seen from the banks of the Dniestr by Giacomo Quarenghi was auctioned at Christies in London in November 2005, the result exceeded expectations many times over. The upper estimate was set at a - in retrospect quite modest - GBP 5,000.00 but the actual price achieved was more than ten times as high at GBP 54,000.00 (€ 79,332.82). Despite this good result, it is not the highest hammer price for an artwork by Giacomo Quarenghi; that achieved among the auctions we observed the lot Four views of Bakhchiserai in the Crimea: Houses along the river; The walls of a mosque; A lane with a view of mountains; and A mosque among trees sold at auction in November 2005 with the realized price of GBP 60,000.00 (€ 88,147.58).
