Artwork auctioned at four times the upper estimate price
The work Portrait of a gentleman, half-length, in a painted oval by Gerard ter Borch II was worth USD 86,500.00 (€ 68,282.29) to a buyer in June 2012. This price was achieved in the auction Old Master Paintings at Christies in New York and exceeded the previously set upper estimate of USD 20,000.00 many times over. Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Gerard ter Borch II achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work Portrait of Jan Craeyvanger (bapt. 7 September 1641-'died young'), three-quarter-length, in a grey costume with a white collar and a grey mantle, standing with a black hat in his right hand, in a painted oval; Portrait of Willem Craeyvanger (bapt. 31 in May 2009 with an auction result of EUR 745,000.00.
7 September 1641-'died young'), three-quarter-length, in a grey costume with a white collar and a grey mantle, standing with a black hat in his right hand, in a painted oval; Portrait of Willem Craeyvanger (bapt. 31 im Mai 2009 mit einem Auktionsergebnis von EUR 745.000,00.
