Auction result misses estimated price range
When the work Two Letters To William Powell Frith, R.A., Humourously Depicting du Maurier, Frith And Lord Leighton by George du Maurier was auctioned at Christies in London in September 2004, the result was somewhat disappointing. The auction house had previously given the estimated price as a range of GBP 200.00 – 400.00, of which not even the lower limit was reached - in fact, the artwork changed hands for GBP 155.35 (€ 226.33). Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by George du Maurier achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work 'Two Thrones' in November 2000 with an auction result of GBP 8,812.50 (€ 14,403.68).
