Towne. del t/ 1786' (lower right), and inscribed 'N o 35/ A View of the Lake of Wyburn with Raven Cragg on the left hand & Skiddaw in the Distance, Cumberland/ Drawn on the Spot by Francis Towne/ August 17 th. 1786/ 4 OClock in the afternoon light from the/ Left hand' (verso of the original mount) and with further inscription '150 B.P.' (verso of the original mount)

Auction result well in line with expectations
In January 2020 Christies in New York held the auction Old Master & British Drawings Including Works from the Collection of Jean Bonna, which included the work The Lake of Wyburn (Thirlmere), with Raven Crag to the left and Skiddaw beyond, Cumberland by Francis Towne. The price achieved of USD 23,750.00 (€ 21,409.90) was within expectations - the estimate range had previously been set by the auction house as USD 20,000.00 – 30,000.00. Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Francis Towne achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work Lake Of Albano, Morning Sun Rising Over Rocca Del Papa in July 2010 with an auction result of GBP 289,250.00 (€ 347,790.53).

Im Januar 2020 führte Christies in New York die Auktion Old Master & British Drawings Including Works from the Collection of Jean Bonna durch, in der auch die Arbeit The Lake of Wyburn (Thirlmere), with Raven Crag to the left and Skiddaw beyond, Cumberland von Francis Towne zur Versteigerung kam. Der dabei erzielte Preis von USD 23.750,00 (€ 21.409,90) lag im Rahmen der Erwartungen – die Schätzpreisspanne war von dem Auktionshaus zuvor mit USD 20.000,00 – 30.000,00 angegeben worden. Dieser Preis hat freilich nichts mit den Spitzenpreisen zu tun, die andere Arbeiten von Francis Towne erzielen. Den höchsten von uns bisher beobachteten Preis erreichte die Arbeit Lake Of Albano, Morning Sun Rising Over Rocca Del Papa im Juli 2010 mit einem Auktionsergebnis von GBP 289.250,00 (€ 347.790,53).
