WILLEBRODE AT WESEL IN GERMANY OCTR. 12th. 1555 / TAKEN FROM THE ORIGINAL IN THE COLLECTION / OF HIS GRACE THE DUKE OF ANCASTER DECR 1739 / BY FRANCIS HAYMAN', and with identifying inscription 'THE RT. HON. PEREGRINE LORD WILLOUGHBY OF ERESBY / FATHER OF ROBERT EARL OF LINDSEY (both lower left), with the sitter's coat-of-arms and motto 'LOYALTY ME OBLIGE.' (twice, lower left

Probably commissioned by Peregrine Bertie (1709-1777), son of Charles Bertie (d. 1730), of Uffington House, Lincolnshire, and by descent through his son, Albemarle, 9th Earl of Lindsey (1744-1818), to his grandson, Montague Peregrine Albemarle, 12th Earl of Lindsey (1861-1938), and by descent to his daughter, | the late Lady Muriel Barclay-Harvey (1893-1980).

In December 2014 Christies in London held the auction Old Master & British Paintings Day Sale, which included the work Portrait Of Peregrine Bertie, 13Th Lord Willoughby De Eresby (1555-1601), Full-Length, In A Black Doublet And Pantaloons, Wearing Damascened Armour, In A Wooded River Landscape By A Waterfall, With A Bridge And A Castle Beyond by Francis Hayman. The »bidding war« ended at GBP 42,500.00 (€ 54,711.59), 70% above the upper estimate. However, buyers have had to dig much deeper into their pockets for other works by Francis Hayman - we have observed the highest auction result to date for the work Portrait of Joseph Henry of Straffan, Co. Kildare, full-length, seated at a table writing a letter, in a blue coat, yellow waistcoat and red breeches, beside a bookcase, which sold at auction in May 2001 for GBP 69,750.00 (€ 116,937.46).

Das »Bietergefecht« endete beim Preis von GBP 42.500,00 (€ 54.711,59) und damit 70% über dem oberen Schätzpreis. Für andere Arbeiten von Francis Hayman mussten die Käufer allerdings auch schon deutlich tiefer in die Tasche greifen – das bisher höchste Auktionsergebnis haben wir für die Arbeit Portrait of Joseph Henry of Straffan, Co.
