The »bidding war« ended at GBP 12,000.00 (€ 13,408.94), 50% above the upper estimate. Admittedly, works by Francis Hayman have also been auctioned for a multiple of this price - according to our records, the highest result so far was achieved by the work Portrait of Joseph Henry of Straffan, Co. Kildare, full-length, seated at a table writing a letter, in a blue coat, yellow waistcoat and red breeches, beside a bookcase in May 2001 with an auction result of GBP 69,750.00 (€ 116,937.46).

Freilich wurden Arbeiten von Francis Hayman auch schon für ein Vielfaches dieses Preises versteigert – das bisher höchste Ergebnis erzielte nach unseren Aufzeichnungen die Arbeit Portrait of Joseph Henry of Straffan, Co.
