In 1904, jiachen year of the Guangxu period, many events were held at the Qing court to celebrate Cixi’s 70th birthday. At that time, an American artist, Katherine A. Carl, created an oil portrait of the Dowager Empress showing her to have a clear andradiant complexion and calm demeanour. According to the memoirs of Carl, Cixi

This artwork by Empress Dowager Cixi achieved an unexpectedly high price at Christies in Hong Kong in May 2016. In the 30 Years: The Sale auction, the work Peaches sold for HKD 1,240,000.00 (€ 143,321.06) - well above the upper estimate of HKD 700,000.00. However, buyers have had to dig much deeper into their pockets for other works by Empress Dowager Cixi - we have observed the highest auction result to date for the work Lotus, Root and Seed, which sold at auction in May 2013 for HKD 3,150,000.00 (€ 312,380.66).
Oberer Schätzpreis um 77 % übertroffen
Dieses Kunstwerk von Empress Dowager Cixi erzielte im Mai 2016 bei Christies in Hong Kong einen unerwartet hohen Preis. In der Auktion 30 Years: The Sale wurde die Arbeit Peaches für HKD 1.240.000,00 (€ 143.321,06) versteigert – und damit weit über dem oberen Schätzpreis von HKD 700.000,00. Für andere Arbeiten von Empress Dowager Cixi mussten die Käufer allerdings auch schon deutlich tiefer in die Tasche greifen – das bisher höchste Auktionsergebnis haben wir für die Arbeit Lotus, Root and Seed beobachtet, die im Mai 2013 für HKD 3.150.000,00 (€ 312.380,66) versteigert wurde.
