A top price for Empress Dowager Cixi
When the work Lotus, Root and Seed by Empress Dowager Cixi was auctioned at Christies in Hong Kong in May 2013, the result exceeded expectations many times over. The upper estimate was set at a - in retrospect quite modest - HKD 300,000.00 but the actual price achieved was more than ten times as high at HKD 3,150,000.00 (€ 312,380.66). This high result makes Lotus, Root and Seed the most expensive artwork by Empress Dowager Cixi that we have observed at auctions so far.

Als die Arbeit Lotus, Root and Seed von Empress Dowager Cixi im Mai 2013 bei Christies in Hong Kong versteigert wurde, übertraf das Ergebnis die Erwartungen um ein Vielfaches. Der obere Schätzpreis war mit – rückwirkend betrachtet recht bescheidenen – HKD 300.000,00 angesetzt, der tatsächlich erzielte Preis hingegen war mit HKD 3.150.000,00 (€ 312.380,66) mehr als zehnmal so hoch. Dieses hohe Ergebnis macht Lotus, Root and Seed zu dem teuersten Kunstwerk von Empress Dowager Cixi, das wir bisher bei Auktionen beobachtet haben.
