This artwork by Elizabeth Siddal achieved an unexpectedly high price at Christies in London in December 2010. In the Victorian & British Impressionist Pictures Including Drawings and Watercolours auction, the work Clerk Saunders sold for GBP 7,250.00 (€ 8,409.98) - well above the upper estimate of GBP 3,000.00. Despite this good result, it is not the highest hammer price for an artwork by Elizabeth Siddal; that achieved among the auctions we observed the lot Study for The Ladies' Lament from the ballad of 'Sir Patrick Spens'; and two studies for La Belle Dame sans merci (illustrated) sold at auction in November 2000 with the realized price of GBP 5,640.00 (€ 9,218.36).
