Description
signed, dedicated and dated 'To Myra Chigerovitch./Christmas 1946/Edward Wadsworth.' (on the artist's label attached to the reverse)
tempera on panel
14 x 10 in. (35.6 x 25.6 cm.)
After the First World War many artists began to return to a more traditional aesthetic and style, rejecting the avant-garde. Wadsworth began to paint incredibly detailed compositions, often using the very traditional medium of tempera; as demonstrated in this portrait of Myra Chigerovitch (née Davis).
Chigerovitch was an artist, who shared a studio in St John's Wood and was close friends with John Minton and Michael Ayrton, whose portrait she painted. In the late 1930s and 1940s she lived nearby Wadsworth in East Sussex, and sat for him for this present portrait. The painting was give to Myra Chigerovitch as a Christmas present in 1946 which is a testament to their great friendship.
We are very grateful to Dr Jonathan Black F.R.S.A. for his assistance in cataloguing this work.
A gift from the artist to Myra Chigerovitch, the present owner's mother, 1946, and by descent.
