Upper estimate price exceeded by more than 100%
This artwork by David Gibson achieved an unexpectedly high price at Christies in London in November 2001. In the Important Portrait Miniatures including works from the auction, the work A young officer, facing left in red coat with white-piped blue lapels and collar, black stock and white jabot, gilt epaulettes, white cross sash with gilt brass plaque, powdered hair en queue; cloud and sky background sold for GBP 4,112.50 (€ 6,544.28) - well above the upper estimate of GBP 1,800.00. However, buyers have had to dig much deeper into their pockets for other works by David Gibson - we have observed the highest auction result to date for the work Portrait Of Count Mikhail Semyonovich Vorontsov (1782-1856), which sold at auction in May 2020 for GBP 15,000.00 (€ 16,651.65).
