Artwork auctioned at four times the upper estimate price
When the work A book of sketches, mainly after Egyptian objects, bass reliefs and paintings, many inscribed with colour notes, some inscribed in French by Benjamin Robert Haydon was auctioned at Bonhams in April this year, the result exceeded expectations many times over. The upper estimate was set at a - in retrospect quite modest - GBP 1,200.00 but the actual price achieved was more than four times as high at GBP 5,355.00 (€ 6,102.95). Admittedly, works by Benjamin Robert Haydon have also been auctioned for a multiple of this price - according to our records, the highest result so far was achieved by the work Heracles and Persephone in December 2000 with an auction result of GBP 25,850.00 (€ 41,178.82).
