Auction result well in line with expectations
The work Sailing Match By Schooners of The Royal Yacht Squadron 23Rd August 1837, Dolphin In Advance of Menai by Arthur Wellington Fowles was sold in the MARITIME PICTURES auction at Christies in London in November 2005. The price achieved of GBP 1,680.00 (€ 2,468.13) was within expectations - the estimate range had previously been set by the auction house as GBP 1,500.00 – 2,000.00. Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Arthur Wellington Fowles achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work The Indian troopship Serapis arriving at Portsmouth, 11 May 1876, with H.R.H. The Prince of Wales aboard her on his return from India, and the Royal yacht Osborne following her in in November 2000 with an auction result of GBP 22,325.00 (€ 36,489.33).
