Auction result misses estimated price range
When the work An Equestrian Portrait Of Napoleon With A Battle Beyond by Antoine Charles Horace Vernet was auctioned at Sothebys in New York in June 2012, the result was somewhat disappointing. The auction house had previously given the estimated price as a range of USD 100,000.00 – 150,000.00, of which not even the lower limit was reached - in fact, the artwork changed hands for USD 98,500.00 (€ 77,754.97). Other works by Antoine Charles Horace Vernet have also sold for higher prices; the highest price we have seen at auction so far was achieved in April 2003 by the work A Skirmish with the Cossacks during Napoleon's Russian Campaign of 1812 at USD 153,100.00 (€ 124,674.27).
