Auction result misses estimated price range
In May 2007 a collector was able to acquire the work A Royal Naval two-decker heeling in the breeze as she approaches her landfall at Cape Town by Albert Ernest Markes for GBP 1,440.00 (€ 2,119.06). This price was achieved in the auction Maritime & Naval Battles (Pictures) at Christies in London and was even below the estimate range of GBP 1,500.00 – 2,500.00 set by the auction house. However, buyers have had to dig much deeper into their pockets for other works by Albert Ernest Markes - we have observed the highest auction result to date for the work A wrecked three-master on the sands with the local inhabitants salvaging what they can, which sold at auction in May 2003 for GBP 4,465.00 (€ 6,220.87).
