»Why Three Tones Do Not Form a Triangle«
Chance and control, freedom and expansion: the paintings of Katharina Grosse have earned her a reputation as one of the most important artists of our time. Starting November 1, the ALBERTINA in Vienna will show site-specific works by the artist with Why Three Tones Do Not Form a Triangle.
Katharina Grosse knows no boundaries: Her works question the limits of painting, the closedness of a work of art. Grosse creates her works with spray guns, a technique with which she attracted attention at the Biennale of Sydney in 1998. Since then, her installation painting has become more complex, covering objects, then trees, floors and ceilings, and finally entire rooms and buildings. Also for the ALBERTINA, on the occasion of the exhibition Why Three Tones Do Not Form a Triangle, Grosse is creating »walk-in« paintings, which are created on site in the pillar hall. The work can thus only be experienced for the duration of the exhibition from November 1, 2023 to February 25, 2024.
Living in Berlin and Auckland in New Zealand, Grosse (*1961) is one of the leading artists of the present day. She was a professor at the Kunsthochschule Berlin-Weißensee from 2000 to 2010 and at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf from 2010 to 2018, where she also studied herself. Receiving numerous awards such as the Oskar Schlemmer Prize in 2014 are a testament to her artistic influence. Grosse's work is in renowned museum collections, including the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Kunsthaus Zürich, the Kunstmuseum Bonn and the Arken Museum for Moderne Kunst near Copenhagen.

»The 80s: Photographing Britain«
It was one of the most moving decades in the history of the United Kingdom: the 1980s, characterized by strikes, protests and AIDS. Photographers documented this period and in some cases became political activists themselves through their images. The exhibition The 80s: Photographing Britain opens on November 21 at the Tate Britain in London.
In search of poetry in urban spaces
It is in the context of functional architecture in urban spaces that Guido Klumpe finds the motifs that he stages with his camera as the poetry of the profane. His picturesque images unfold an opulent effect with a reduced formal language, showing us the beauty of the moment in the flow of everyday life.
