An exhibition like a dream walk in which one encounters the entirety of human life: With his sculptures and paintings reduced to gray, black and white, artist Hans Op de Beeck (*1969) invites visitors to the Nocturnal Journey exhibition on a tour through space and time. His artworks symbolize different stages of life, feelings and everyday processes. Their reduction makes it possible to project one's own memories and feelings onto them and thus enter a kind of meditative state in silence. It is a journey through a fictional world, a kind of park at night, which, like a vision, brings the deeply human before our eyes. Op de Beeck repeatedly refers to historical works of art from the museum's collection. The show can be seen from March 22 to August 17 at the Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Antwerp.
Op de Beeck is considered one of Belgium's best-known contemporary artists. His works reflect complex social structures and questions on universal themes such as the meaning of life and mortality. His oeuvre includes sculpture, film, drawing, painting, photography, large installations and written texts. Op de Beeck's works have been shown in numerous solo and group exhibitions worldwide, including at the Venice Biennale, the Shanghai Biennale, the Singapore Biennale and the Tate Modern in London.
