The year 1923 is considered a difficult year of crisis, both economically and politically: the Weimar Republic was confronted with hyperinflation, various attempted coups, and the Ruhr invasion. At the same time, the early 1920s stand for great enthusiasm for sports and a flourishing cultural life, for example in cinemas and theaters. Parallel art movements such as Impressionism, Expressionism, New Objectivity, Surrealism and the Bauhaus brought unprecedented diversity to the Republic. In the midst of these eventful times, the association Freunde der Kunsthalle e.V. was founded, which today is the most important sponsoring association of the Hamburger Kunsthalle. From April 28 to September 24, the exhibition 1923: Faces of an Age provides an insight into the founding year of the association and revives the past.
Some 60 exhibits accompany visitors on their journey to the roaring 20s, a period in which numerous famous artists were active. Among others, Alma del Banco, Robert Delaunay, Otto Dix, George Grosz, Karl Hofer, Wassily Kandinsky, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Käthe Kollwitz, László Moholy-Nagy and Anita Rée can be seen in the show.
