From Seattle to Los Angeles: »Imogen Cunningham: A Retrospective«
Her first major retrospective in the U.S. in more than 35 years continues: Beginning March 8, Imogen Cunningham: A Retrospective will be on view at the Getty Center in Los Angeles. In addition to portraits, plant studies and moving street scenes by the style-setting photographer are on display.
As one of the first female photographers of the early 20th century, Imogen Cunningham enjoys a special position in the history of photography. Many of her works spanning seven decades will be on view in Imogen Cunningham: A Retrospective at the Getty Center in Los Angeles from March 8 to June 12, 2022. The exhibition is a continuation of the first major retrospective in the United States in more than 35 years, whose first stop was the Seattle Art Museum.
Imogen Cunningham's (1883-1976) work ranges from the widespread pictorial style of the 1930s to straight photography to experimental photography, which includes such works as her light abstractions. In 1932, Cunningham co-founded the influential f/64 group, which was dedicated to straight photography. These works were influenced by the New Objectivity and consciously opposed the symbolically influenced pictorialism.
The Käthe Kollwitz Museum presents the sensitive side of the artist through rarely seen drawings and trial prints: Käthe Kollwitz – Silent Strength runs until January 18, 2026, in Berlin.
Everyday scenes, dance events, and changing youth cultures: In the exhibition Ideas of Africa: Portraiture and Political Imagination, the Museum of Modern Art explores how portrait photography influenced pan-African trends. The exhibition runs until July 25, 2026, in New York.
