This artwork by William Roberts achieved an unexpectedly high price at Sothebys in London in May 2012. In the Modern & Post-War British Art auction, the work The Chess Players sold for GBP 1,161,250.00 (€ 1,446,866.41) - well above the upper estimate of GBP 500,000.00. This high result makes The Chess Players the most expensive artwork by William Roberts that we have observed at auctions so far.
