The artist Sidney Nolan

  • One of the most important artists of Australian modernism.
  • Known for his paintings and prints on Australian history.
  • His depictions of the »bandit« Ned Kelly helped establish him as a legendary figure in Australia.

Sidney Nolan was one of the most important artists of Australian Modernism, known for his paintings and prints in the post-war period. His main subject matter was the history and mythology of Aboriginal Australia.

Nolan painted in extremely rich colors and took a technically striking approach: Many of his paintings are deliberately awkward. They tell the Australian story of loss, failure and conquest. Some of his favorite characters were the »bandit« Ned Kelly and his gang, as well as the shipwrecked Eliza Fraser and the explorers Burke and Wills. The images of the Kelly gang helped shape the public image of the legendary Ned Kelly and made him a symbol of Australian history. Nolan has also worked as a set designer and book illustrator, including Samson et Dalila and The Abduction from the Seraglio (1987) at Covent Garden, London, and Il trovatore (1983) at the Australian Opera.

Born in Melbourne in 1917, Nolan studied at the local art school of the National Gallery of Victoria from 1934 to 1936. He taught himself to paint, however, mainly from books on Pablo Picasso, Paul Klee, Henri Matisse and the Surrealists. Nolan was a close friend of the art critics John and Sunday Reed; he even spent some time at their house, the so-called Heath. It was in this environment that he formed the Heath Circle with other artists, including Albert Tucker and John Perceval.

In 1950, Nolan moved to London, where he lived until his death. In 1959, his work was shown at documenta 2. In 1981 he was knighted, in 1985 he was elected an honorary member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters, in 1987 he became an associate member of the Royal Academy of Arts (UK), in 1988 he was made a Companion of the Order of Australia, and in 1991 he was admitted to the Royal Academy of Arts. One year later, Nolan died in London at the age of 75.
