Auction result misses estimated price range
When the work A Portrait Of A Lady As Innocence by William Hoare of Bath was auctioned at Sothebys in New York in June 2012, the result was somewhat disappointing. The auction house had previously given the estimated price as a range of USD 10,000.00 – 15,000.00, of which not even the lower limit was reached - in fact, the artwork changed hands for USD 6,875.00 (€ 5,427.06). Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by William Hoare of Bath achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work Portrait of Ayuba Suleiman Diallo, called Job ben Solomon (1701-1773), half-length, in African dress, with the Qu'ran around his neck, in a feigned oval in December 2009 with an auction result of GBP 541,250.00 (€ 610,549.03).
