Upper estimate price exceeded by more than 100%
This artwork by William Hoare of Bath achieved an unexpectedly high price at Sothebys in London in July 2017. In the Old Master & British Works on Paper auction, the work Portrait Of Henry Fiennes Pelham-Clinton, Earl Of Lincoln (1750-1778); Together With His Elder Sister, Catherine (B. 1748) sold for GBP 21,250.00 (€ 23,711.74) - well above the upper estimate of GBP 8,000.00. Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by William Hoare of Bath achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work Portrait of Ayuba Suleiman Diallo, called Job ben Solomon (1701-1773), half-length, in African dress, with the Qu'ran around his neck, in a feigned oval in December 2009 with an auction result of GBP 541,250.00 (€ 610,549.03).
