Auction result misses estimated price range
In July last year a collector was able to acquire the work Eight capriccio landscape studies by William Gilpin for GBP 2,200.00 (€ 2,627.19). This price was achieved in the auction Old Master and British Works on Paper: Drawings, Watercolours and Prints 1500-1900 at Christies in London and was even below the estimate range of GBP 3,000.00 – 5,000.00 set by the auction house. However, buyers have had to dig much deeper into their pockets for other works by William Gilpin - we have observed the highest auction result to date for the work Observations on the coasts of Hampshire, Sussex and Kent, relative chiefly to Picturesq [sic beauty; made in the year, 1774; An album of thirty views including Guildford Castle (illustrated), Portsmouth, the Isle of Wight, Southsea Castle, the Islan|AID697678], which sold at auction in December 2008 for GBP 9,375.00 (€ 9,846.48).
