Auction result misses estimated price range
When the work Figures on the quayside, Folkestone, Kent by William Collingwood Smith was auctioned at Christies in London in June 2008, the result was somewhat disappointing. The auction house had previously given the estimated price as a range of GBP 600.00 – 800.00, of which not even the lower limit was reached - in fact, the artwork changed hands for GBP 500.00 (€ 632.02). Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by William Collingwood Smith achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work Thanksgiving Day, St Paul's Cathedral, 27 February 1872 in November 2012 with an auction result of GBP 11,250.00 (€ 13,858.86).
