Auction result well in line with expectations
In July 2018 Sothebys in London held the auction Old Masters Day Sale, which included the work An English Ship Firing A Gun And Coming To Anchor Off A European Mediterranean Fortification by Willem van de Velde II. The estimated price for the artwork was previously given by the auction house with a range of GBP 40,000.00 – 60,000.00, the actual price achieved of GBP 43,750.00 (€ 49,053.37) could thus just exceed the lower estimate. Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Willem van de Velde II achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work Dutch men-o'-war and other shipping in a calm in December 2011 with an auction result of GBP 5,921,250.00 (€ 7,091,533.28).
