Sold at the upper estimate price
In July 2017 Christies in London held the auction Old Master & British Drawings & Watercolours, which included the work Ships at sea by Willem van de Velde II. The auction ended at the price of GBP 5,000.00 (€ 5,579.23), which exactly corresponded to the upper end of the estimated price range of GBP 3,000.00 – 5,000.00. Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Willem van de Velde II achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work Dutch men-o'-war and other shipping in a calm in December 2011 with an auction result of GBP 5,921,250.00 (€ 7,091,533.28).
