Artwork auctioned at three times the upper estimate price
The work The Grotto of Virgil at Posillipo near Naples by Willem Schellinks was worth GBP 134,500.00 (€ 169,646.79) to a buyer in July 2014. This price was achieved in the auction The I.Q. van Regteren Altena Collection. Part I at Christies in London and exceeded the previously set upper estimate of GBP 35,000.00 many times over. Despite this good result, it is not the highest hammer price for an artwork by Willem Schellinks; that achieved among the auctions we observed the lot Winter Landscape With The Tiber And The Ponte Molle, Rome sold at auction in January 2009 with the realized price of USD 266,500.00 (€ 208,138.08).
