Bukovac received his artistic education in Paris, by the well-known Alexandre Cabanel. He painted in the spirit of embellished, „sweetened“ realism and achieved great success at the Salons. This canvas shows a harmonious interplay of colour, light and shadow, on a direct and clean stroke. He exhibited at the first Vienna Secession 1896, as well as at the Venice Biennale 1901, before becoming a professor at the Prague Academy in 1903.
