Description
Thomas Waterman Wood
1823 - 1903
A CRITICAL MOMENT
The present work refers to another painting of the same theme by the artist, Fresh Eggs, from 1881. When that work was shown at the Inter-States Exhibition in Chicago in the same year, it drew the attention of Daniel L. Wells, a successful Milwaukee businessman and art collector who commissioned Wood to paint another version of it for his collection. He did not want an exact copy, so Wood made a few changes, among them altering the viewing angle
