Auction result well in line with expectations
The work Elvet bridge, Durham, with a washerwoman in the foreground by Thomas Hearne was sold in the British Art on Paper auction at Christies in London in November 2003. The price achieved of GBP 7,170.00 (€ 10,292.64) was within expectations - the estimate range had previously been set by the auction house as GBP 5,000.00 – 8,000.00. However, buyers have had to dig much deeper into their pockets for other works by Thomas Hearne - we have observed the highest auction result to date for the work Elegant figures rowing on the the River Wear before Lumley Castle, which sold at auction in May 2001 for GBP 12,925.00 (€ 21,669.06).
