inscribed 'Presented to Francis Crawshay Esqr/by T Forster Artist, as a small/token of gratitude. 1843' (on the fly leaf) and further inscribed 'A Digest/of the/Different Castes of India/By Thos. Forster/1841' (on the frontispiece); the pages of the text numbered '1-48'; the drawings numbered 'No. 1-83.' and inscribed with the titles of the figures (lower centre)

Auction result well in line with expectations
The work A digest of the different castes of India including 83 drawings and 51 pages of text which provide an accompanying key to the drawings by Thomas Forster was auctioned at Christies in London in September 2000. The estimated price for the artwork was previously given by the auction house with a range of GBP 1,000.00 – 1,500.00, the actual price achieved of GBP 1,057.50 (€ 1,769.52) could thus just exceed the lower estimate. Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Thomas Forster achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work Portrait Of A Gentleman in December 2019 with an auction result of GBP 65,000.00 (€ 76,822.39).

Der Schätzpreis für das Kunstwerk wurde von dem Auktionshaus zuvor mit einer Spanne von GBP 1.000,00 – 1.500,00 angegeben, der tatsächlich erzielte Preis von GBP 1.057,50 (€ 1.769,52) konnte den unteren Schätzpreis somit knapp übertreffen. Dieser Preis hat freilich nichts mit den Spitzenpreisen zu tun, die andere Arbeiten von Thomas Forster erzielen. Den höchsten von uns bisher beobachteten Preis erreichte die Arbeit Portrait Of A Gentleman im Dezember 2019 mit einem Auktionsergebnis von GBP 65.000,00 (€ 76.822,39).
