In September 2011 a collector was able to acquire the work Portrait of a gentleman, traditionally identified as John Sheffield, 1st Duke of Buckingham and Normanby (1647-1721), full-length, in a dark coat with a brown mantle, seated by a table by Godfrey Kneller for GBP 8,750.00 (€ 10,165.07). This price was achieved in the auction The Cowdray Sale: Works of Art from Cowdray Park and Dunecht House,At Cowdray Park, West Sussex at Christies in London and was even below the estimate range o Admittedly, works by Godfrey Kneller have also been auctioned for a multiple of this price - according to our records, the highest result so far was achieved by the work Portrait of Elizabeth, Duchess of Dorset, Full-Length, In A White Dress With A Blue Wrap, Leaning On A Stone Pedestal With Her Left Hand, Beside A Draped Curtain in April 2008 with an auction result of GBP 50,900.00 (€ 64,890.31).
