Auction result misses estimated price range
When the work The Black Ball Line clipper ship Ocean Chief reducing sail on her Australian run by Samuel Walters was auctioned at Christies in New York in January 2007, the result was somewhat disappointing. The auction house had previously given the estimated price as a range of USD 30,000.00 – 50,000.00, of which not even the lower limit was reached - in fact, the artwork changed hands for USD 28,800.00 (€ 22,157.25). However, buyers have had to dig much deeper into their pockets for other works by Samuel Walters - we have observed the highest auction result to date for the work The Confederate blockade runner C.S.S COLONEL LAMB at sea, which sold at auction in February 2004 for USD 77,675.00 (€ 62,434.69).
