There is a watercolour sketch of Xhosa by a kraal with huntsmen and their dogs bringing in their kill on the reverse of the first drawing. The Cape porcupine seen here (Hystrix africaeaustralis, Peters 1852; incanda, Xhosa; Kaapse ystervark, Afrikaans) was killed for its meat and quills, and is used in the traditional medecine of the Xhosa and Sotho communities in the Western Cape.
The two drawings are preparatory sketches for the plate published in 1804. The accompanying text reads:

Auction result well in line with expectations
The work Two Sketches Of Xhosa On The March by Samuel Daniell was sold in the Topographical Pictures, including China Trade Paintings. ARCTIC · AMERICAS · AFRICA · ASIA · AUSTRALASIA · ANTARCTICA auction at Christies in London in November 2020. It changed hands for a price of GBP 2,375.00 (€ 2,651.30) achieving a result in the upper range of the estimate price range of GBP 1,500.00 – 2,500.00. Admittedly, works by Samuel Daniell have also been auctioned for a multiple of this price - according to our records, the highest result so far was achieved by the work African Scenery And Animals (Abbey Travel 321, Nos. 1-18, 20-32) in April 2013 with an auction result of GBP 16,250.00 (€ 19,175.94).

Die Arbeit Two Sketches Of Xhosa On The March von Samuel Daniell wurde im November 2020 in der Auktion Topographical Pictures, including China Trade Paintings. ARCTIC · AMERICAS · AFRICA · ASIA · AUSTRALASIA · ANTARCTICA bei Christies in London versteigert. Dabei wechselte sie für einen Preis von GBP 2.375,00 (€ 2.651,30) den Besitzer und erzielte damit ein Ergebnis im oberen Bereich der Schätzpreisspanne von GBP 1.500,00 – 2.500,00. Freilich wurden Arbeiten von Samuel Daniell auch schon für ein Vielfaches dieses Preises versteigert – das bisher höchste Ergebnis erzielte nach unseren Aufzeichnungen die Arbeit African Scenery And Animals (Abbey Travel 321, Nos. 1-18, 20-32) im April 2013 mit einem Auktionsergebnis von GBP 16.250,00 (€ 19.175,94).
