This artwork by Roelandt Savery achieved an unexpectedly high price at Sothebys in London in July 2017. In the Old Masters Evening Sale auction, the work Orpheus Playing The Lyre To The Animals, A Moment Before His Death At The Hands Of The Thracian Maenads sold for GBP 380,750.00 (€ 424,858.53) - well above the upper estimate of GBP 150,000.00. Despite this good result, it is not the highest hammer price for an artwork by Roelandt Savery; that achieved among the auctions we observed the lot Orpheus Charming The Animals sold at auction in December 2016 with the realized price of GBP 452,750.00 (€ 529,338.21).
