Artwork auctioned at six times the upper estimate price
The work Self-Portrait, Circa 1800 by Richard Cosway was worth GBP 40,000.00 (€ 44,616.95) to a buyer in July 2020. This price was achieved in the auction Old Master Day Sale including Old Master Paintings, Drawings and British Works on Paper at Sothebys in London and exceeded the previously set upper estimate of GBP 6,000.00 many times over. Despite this good result, it is not the highest hammer price for an artwork by Richard Cosway; that achieved among the auctions we observed the lot Portrait of Maria Fitzherbert sold at auction in July 2019 with the realized price of GBP 81,250.00 (€ 89,207.10).
