Commissioned by King George IV when Prince of Wales (1762-1830) and given to Maria Fitzherbert, née Smythe (1756-1837), by whom bequeathed to her adopted daughter | ‘Minney’ Mary Georgiana Emma Dawson-Damer, née Seymour (1798-1848), and by descent to her third daughter | Lady Cecilia Blanche Horatio Seymour Haygarth, née Dawson-Damer (d.1922), by whom given to her nephew | Hugh, 4th Earl Fortescue (1854-1932) | and by descent to the present owners.

A top price for Richard Cosway - as previously expected
The work Portrait of Maria Fitzherbert by Richard Cosway was sold in the Old Master and British Drawings and Watercolours Including Works from the Collection of Jean Bonna auction at Christies in London in July 2019. The price achieved of GBP 81,250.00 (€ 89,207.10) was within expectations - the estimate range had previously been set by the auction house as GBP 70,000.00 – 100,000.00. Even if this result could not surprise positively, Portrait of Maria Fitzherbert is the most expensive artwork by Richard Cosway that we have observed at auctions so far.
