Artwork auctioned at three times the upper estimate price

The work Portrait Of Hugh, Baron Cholmondeley, Later 1St Earl Of Cholmondeley (1662-1724) by Peter Cross was worth GBP 11,875.00 (€ 14,034.86) to a buyer in December 2019. This price was achieved in the auction The Pohl-Ströher Collection of Portrait Miniatures, Part III at Sothebys in London and exceeded the previously set upper estimate of GBP 3,000.00 many times over. However, buyers have had to dig much deeper into their pockets for other works by Peter Cross - we have observed the highest auction result to date for the work A young gentleman erroneously called Duke of Monmouth, facing left in grey coat, lace jabot and blue cloak over his right shoulder, full bottomed wig, which sold at auction in November 2000 for GBP 19,975.00 (€ 32,648.35).
