Auction result misses estimated price range
This work of art by Nicolaes Maes could be acquired at Christies in October 2021 for an unexpectedly low price. In the Old Master Paintings and Sculpture auction, the work Portrait of a man, three-quarter-length, leaning on a broken column, traditionally identified as Count Borchgrave changed hands for USD 6,250.00 (€ 5,410.32) - missing the lower end of the estimate range of USD 15,000.00 – 20,000.00. Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Nicolaes Maes achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work Group portrait of a family in an Italianate garden with an ornate fountain in December 2005 with an auction result of GBP 792,000.00 (€ 1,149,543.66).
