Auction result well in line with expectations
The work Threemasters in distress off the coast by Martinus Schouman was sold in the PICTURES, WATERCOLOURS AND DRAWINGS auction at Christies in Amsterdam in March 2002. The price achieved of EUR 3,525.00 was within expectations - the estimate range had previously been set by the auction house as EUR 3,000.00 – 4,000.00. Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Martinus Schouman achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work The English flagship Venerable engaging the Dutch flagship Vrijheid at the Battle of Camperdown, 11th October 1797; the Dutch ships Staten-Generaal and Admiral de Vries to the left and right respectively in February 2004 with an auction result of USD 45,410.00 (€ 36,500.28).
