This artwork by Martinus Schouman achieved an unexpectedly high price at Sothebys in Amsterdam in March 2007. In the Paintings, Drawings and Watercolours auction, the work A Dutch Brig Coming To The Aid Of A Frigate In Distress sold for EUR 11,400.00 - well above the upper estimate of EUR 6,000.00. However, buyers have had to dig much deeper into their pockets for other works by Martinus Schouman - we have observed the highest auction result to date for the work The English flagship Venerable engaging the Dutch flagship Vrijheid at the Battle of Camperdown, 11th October 1797; the Dutch ships Staten-Generaal and Admiral de Vries to the left and right respectively, which sold at auction in February 2004 for USD 45,410.00 (€ 36,500.28).
