Artwork auctioned at four times the upper estimate price
The work Portrait of a lady, three-quarter-length, in a black dress with slashed sleeves and a cartwheel ruff of pointed lace by Marcus Gheeraerts the Younger was worth GBP 562,500.00 (€ 671,724.91) to a buyer in July last year. This price was achieved in the auction Old Masters Evening Sale at Christies in London and exceeded the previously set upper estimate of GBP 120,000.00 many times over. However, buyers have had to dig much deeper into their pockets for other works by Marcus Gheeraerts the Younger - we have observed the highest auction result to date for the work Portrait of Frances Howard, Countess of Hertford, later Duchess of Lennox and Richmond, full-length, in a masquerade dress, with a wreath of pansies in her hair, which sold at auction in July 2011 for GBP 1,721,250.00 (€ 1,975,391.88).
