This artwork by Marcus Gheeraerts the Younger achieved an unexpectedly high price at Christies in London in July 2015. In the Old Master & British Paintings Day Sale auction, the work Portrait of Robert Devereux, 2nd Earl of Essex (1565-1601), three-quarter-length, in a white doublet and hose with a black cape, wearing the Order of the Garter sold for GBP 146,500.00 (€ 207,687.79) - well above the upper estimate of GBP 80,000.00. Admittedly, works by Marcus Gheeraerts the Younger have also been auctioned for a multiple of this price - according to our records, the highest result so far was achieved by the work Portrait of Frances Howard, Countess of Hertford, later Duchess of Lennox and Richmond, full-length, in a masquerade dress, with a wreath of pansies in her hair in July 2011 with an auction result of GBP 1,721,250.00 (€ 1,975,391.88).

In der Auktion Old Master & British Paintings Day Sale wurde die Arbeit Portrait of Robert Devereux, 2nd Earl of Essex (1565-1601), three-quarter-length, in a white doublet and hose with a black cape, wearing the Order of the Garter für GBP 146.500,00 (€ 207.687,79) versteigert – und damit weit über dem oberen Schätzpreis von GBP 80.000,00. Freilich wurden Arbeiten von Marcus Gheeraerts the Younger auch schon für ein Vielfaches dieses Preises versteigert – das bisher höchste Ergebnis erzielte nach unseren Aufzeichnungen die Arbeit Portrait of Frances Howard, Countess of Hertford, later Duchess of Lennox and Richmond, full-length, in a masquerade dress, with a wreath of pansies in her hair im Juli 2011 mit einem Auktionsergebnis von GBP 1.721.250,00 (€ 1.975.391,88).
