Upper estimated price slightly exceeded
In September 2001 Christies in London held the auction British and Continental Watercolours and Drawings, which included the work Near Monnikerdam; and Near Middleburgh by Louis Van Staaten. The »bidding war« ended at GBP 705.00 (€ 1,138.27), 18% above the upper estimate. Other works by Louis Van Staaten have achieved even higher prices, we observed the highest auction result so far of GBP 977.50 (€ 1,599.60) in February 2000 for the work Figures on barges in a Dutch port; and A Dutch canal scene.
