Description
Artist “beloved by the poets” according to Paul Eluard, Louis Marcoussis embodies all the poetry of Cubism, from which he barely strayed, unlike its founders. Known for his geometric compositions on flat surfaces where objects are represented in a totally unstructured way and from several angles, his style is characterized by deconstructed forms and a fragmented pictorial space. The earthy palette, favouring warm tones, is applied generously and harmoniously, to create a smooth atmosphere. The detail of the wheel here reinforces the abstract dimension of the subject and highlights the fragmentation of the forms to which it is juxtaposed.
