Auction result well in line with expectations
In November 2001 Christies in London held the auction British Pictures 1500-1850, which included the work A lady and her children by a cottage in a landscape by Catherine Read. The estimated price for the artwork was previously given by the auction house with a range of GBP 2,000.00 – 3,000.00, the actual price achieved of GBP 2,115.00 (€ 3,365.63) could thus just exceed the lower estimate. However, buyers have had to dig much deeper into their pockets for other works by Catherine Read - we have observed the highest auction result to date for the work Portrait of Lady Isabella Stanhope, later Countess of Sefton (1748-1819), half-length, in Hussar's costume, with a blue pelisse over a braided red dolman, which sold at auction in May 2012 for GBP 10,625.00 (€ 13,238.28).
